Edmonton gets a taste of the Island life

From Ian: It was nice to see our normally winterized city get a little splash of fun in the sun with the Cariwest festival a week ago. Photos for those who were there or care are attached. It was a great hot Edmonton summer day (we do have those) and everyone was on their feet dancing.

I think we need a parade like this for every region of the world that lives in Edmonton. I know we have Heritage Days in Hawrelak Park, but hey this is a parade. Everyone likes a parade.

Technical info: I shot this using my D700s with both a 24-70mm and a 70-200mm lens. The aperature and shutter speed was all over the place because of the changing light. I did not use flash though I did try to use the existing sunlight in unusual ways.

August 6th Intersections

From Meryl:

Here’s a photo that ran in the August 6th issue of See Magazine, on the Intersections page.  This little girl was swinging on a hammock with a family friend, and I had to take a photo of her dreamily staring out the holes of the mesh.

Taken with a Nikon D300 camera with 55mm lens at f 2.8.

Oui, Oui To the GG

Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada visits the iHuman centre in
Edmonton, Alberta on Friday, July 31, 2009. PHOTO BY JIMMY JEONG

From Jimmy: Let me say, the GG could cause the polar ice caps to melt with her smile.
I've never seen a political figure able to make just everyone in the room
feel comfortable and welcome. Usually when I go to these events where token
kids are brought in to make a political figure look good, you can easily tell
that someone had bribed (the kids, that is) them to be there. But I got the feeling that the
kids at this event really wanted to be there and were thrilled to meet
her.

The Technical Stuff: I find the biggest obstacle on an assignment like this
is other media. There were probably 20 or so media types with video cameras,
still cameras or audio types all trying to get in the best position. You try
to get a great shot, but you have to realize that we all have to work
together in the future. So you try to play nice and not block someone else's shot.
Although, on this occasion I did accidently get in the way of a CTV camera
person - I"M SORRY (and I did apologize to him).

Be gentle it's our first time

From Ian: So this is our first post to our first blog. I put up some photos
I took recently at a No Doubt concert in Edmonton. Gwen Stefani was the main
attraction and she definitely had a work out.
