Synchro outside at night

Photo of Calgary, Alberta Killarney Synchro swimmers in the Hotel Arts swimming pool outside at xmas event put on by Cracked Pepper Events. The girls loved performing in the dark with lights. I think synchro swimming should be done this way all the time.

Gear: shot this with Nikon D3S 70-200 f2.8 at 3200 ISO f2.8 shutter 250.

Media darling, Taylor Hall, creates a buzz in Edmonton

John:  Taylor Hall, one of the top two NHL draft picks, met with the Edmonton Oilers yesterday. His whirlwind visit to Edmonton resulted in an assignment from The Canadian Press, that presented me a front row seat with the future NHL star.  I can’t say that I have any opinion of who the Oilers should choose – Taylor, or his main rival Tyler Seguin – but, I can tell you (no newsflash here) this is going to be one heck of an interesting season.

Technical notes:

Because I like to avoid flash on news jobs, my Nikon D700 bodies were set at a luxurious ISO 3200, and I alternated amongst 14-24mm,  24-70mm and 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses.

What happens when you put down your camera?

Ian: You pick up your iPhone. My other job, when not being a photographer, is designing multimedia projections for live theatre. The show is I Google Myself by Jason Schafer playing at Northern Light Theatre. The set is a giant laptop.

I took this photo with my iPhone using a app called Hipstamatic. This is a very cool app. If you have ever used a toy camera this gives you the same kind of effects. Holt digital here come.

The other app I used after was a free HDR app to give it a supersaturated look.

Irrelevant show TOO Funny!

From Ian: CBC Radio’s The Irrelevant Show was doing a live taping this past weekend and they asked me to take some photos.

These guys are very funny especially the caveman morning show bit with Grog and the Raptor. The troupe is made up of some of the funniest people in Edmonton. Neil Grahn, Jana O’Connor, Mark Meer, Donovan Workum, and Marianne Copithorne. The scripts for the sketches come from writers from across Canada.

Tech stuff: I shot all of this with my Nikon D700. The promo head shots at the beginning are lit with SB900s in Softboxes with a white paper backdrop. I used a 70-200 f2.8 lens at f4 at 200 ISO. For the taping of the show D700 with a variety of lens 70-200, 24-70, and a 400mm. Most of the time my ISO was 3200. Love the low noise on the Nikons. I used to shoot Canon, it sucked for theatre work.

Edmonton gets a taste of the Island life

From Ian: It was nice to see our normally winterized city get a little splash of fun in the sun with the Cariwest festival a week ago. Photos for those who were there or care are attached. It was a great hot Edmonton summer day (we do have those) and everyone was on their feet dancing.

I think we need a parade like this for every region of the world that lives in Edmonton. I know we have Heritage Days in Hawrelak Park, but hey this is a parade. Everyone likes a parade.

Technical info: I shot this using my D700s with both a 24-70mm and a 70-200mm lens. The aperature and shutter speed was all over the place because of the changing light. I did not use flash though I did try to use the existing sunlight in unusual ways.
